People are sometimes confused or mystified by the idea of therapy, or they may have a misconception or misunderstanding of what therapy involves. Therapy (sometimes also referred to as "counseling" or "psychotherapy") should not be a mystery. In the most simple terms, therapy is a personal learning process focused on meeting your goals for self-improvement. Oftentimes people seek therapy when certain issues or problems feel overwhelming or begin to interfere with their overall level of functioning. A therapist is trained to help people work on facilitating lifestyle changes, provide supportive and objective feedback, help identify underlying causes of distress, and teach coping mechanisms to facilitate positive change. It is up to you to decide areas that need improvement or change. I am here to assist in the journey of self-healing, growth, insight, and transformation.
Individual Therapy: Individual therapy is a process wherein a therapist meets one-on-one with a person who seeks counseling for a variety of reasons. The initial stage of individual therapy typically involves gathering information about a person's life, relationships, and background and the therapist will work with the individual to determine areas that the person desires to change. People may seek therapy for a wide variety of reasons, from coping with major life challenges or changes, dealing with chronic depression or long-standing anxiety, or because they are having difficulty with other people in their lives. Others simply desire personal growth and a greater understanding of themselves and their behaviors or patterns. People seek out individual therapy for a wide variety of reasons; however, the overall goal of therapy is for people to live a more insightful, content, and personally fulfilling future.
Relationship or Couples Therapy: Relationship or couples therapy can take many forms. It typically involves two people who are engaged in an intimate relationship (married or dating) who are having difficulties and want to work on improving their relationship. Couples counseling often involves exploring and improving issues such as communication, commitment level, and understanding the needs and wants of their partner. Couples oftentimes need the help of a therapist when they are having difficulty communicating, if there has been an infidelity, or when they are deciding if the relationship can be saved. Many types of couples can benefit from therapy including married couples, couples who are dating, cohabitating, or engaged, and also couples who are separating or preparing for divorce. Other forms of relationship counseling involves the relationship with a parent, child, friend, or other family member.
Whether it be individual or couples therapy, the process of therapy can be short-term and solution focused, or more long-term and process oriented. We will work together to set the pace and identify your needs. Typically therapy sessions last for approximately 50-55 minutes. I do, however, also offer 30-minute and 45-minute sessions upon request. My office environment is warm, comfortable, and serene. I currently offer therapy services on weekdays and weekends (both Saturdays and Sundays). Additionally, I also currently offer what has come to be known as teletherapy, or sessions that are conducted online for clients who reside in both Illinois and Virginia. This is done either via telephone or on an online platform where we can see each other and speak to each other via smartphone or computer (similar to Skype or FaceTime). You are welcome to choose whichever therapy setting feels the most right for you.
